CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Generally more resistant than 304 in a variety of atmospheric environments and numerous corrosive media, owing to its enhanced chromium
  and molybdenum content.
• It is prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and may experience stress corrosion cracking above approximately 122°F (50°C).
• This grade is considered resistant to potable water with chloride levels up to about 1000mg/L at ambient temperatures, reducing to around 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Commonly referred to as the 'marine grade stainless steel' - but it is not resistant to warm seawater.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L offers superior resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Boasting exceptional weldability using all standard fusion methods, both with and without filler metals.
• Heavy welded sections of Grade 316 necessitate post-weld annealing for optimal corrosion resistance, unlike Grade 316L, which does not.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The recommended annealing temperature range is between 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
• Special precautions are needed to account for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers suggest a maximum forging temperature range between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C). Optimal
• corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• 316/316L types, known for their exceptional toughness and ductility, can be readily cold worked through processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., without significant difficulty.
• Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to alleviate stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• 316/316L is somewhat more challenging to machine compared to Type 304 due to its toughness.
• 316/316L produces tough and strong chip characteristics during machining.
• Utilizing chip breakers and curlers is advisable.
• Employing the largest possible tool and ample cutting fluid is recommended.
• Considering heavy positive feeds at low speeds is beneficial since 316/316L work hardens quickly.
