GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade that combines excellent corrosion resistance and formability with usable mechanical properties. Because of its outstanding resistance, it is versatile and can be used in various chemical applications, with automobile trim and appliance components being the most common.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant, available in bar form for automatic screw machines. Grade 434, the molybdenum-bearing counterpart, offers similar advantages with enhanced corrosion resistance thanks to the molybdenum addition.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the characteristics of Grade 430 for flat rolled products such as plate, sheet, and coil. Other forms like forgings and bar have specific attributes defined by their specifications. The properties for Grade 430F bar are detailed in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material exhibits excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments, including some organic acids. Highest corrosion resistance is achieved when highly polished or ground. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is comparable to Grade 304, and it has very high resistance to stress corrosion cracking like all ferritic grades.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, has significantly reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating in the 400-600°C range can cause it to become brittle at room temperature, an effect that can be eliminated by annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm thickness, then slow furnace cool to 600°C and quickly air cool. Slow cooling from 540-400°C will cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C and then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- For optimal welding results, pre-heat the material to a temperature range of 150-200°C.
- To alleviate embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zones, perform a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C.
- Note that grain refinement will not be achieved.
MACHINING:
- This material is more machinable than standard austenitic grades such as 304.
- However, there remains a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn are easier to machine compared to those in the annealed state.
- The 430F grade, a free-machining version of 430, offers significantly easier machinability.
FABRICATION:
- A lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming somewhat easier than with grade 304 steel.
- However, lower ductility limits extremely severe operations.
- For severe bends, ensure the bend axis is at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable.
