Leading Stainless Steel Sheet Suppliers in China
Grade 904L:
- Austenitic stainless steel sheet of grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high alloy, low carbon steel. The inclusion of copper significantly enhances its resistance to strong reducing acids, particularly sulfuric acid.
- This grade offers exceptional formability and weldability and remains non-magnetic under all conditions. Due to its austenitic structure, it possesses remarkable toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures, along with excellent resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
- Nickel and molybdenum, two of the most premium elements, are present in substantial quantities in 904L. This composition provides superior performance but comes at a higher cost. Nowadays, Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205) is often chosen for many applications where 904L was traditionally favored, offering similar performance at a more economical price. As a result, the use of 904L has become less prevalent.
Corrosion Resistance:
- 904L Stainless Steel offers exceptional resilience across various conditions, far extending beyond its initial design for sulfuric acid resistance. Its performance in warm seawater and other high-chloride environments is outstanding, as evidenced by a PRE (Pitting Resistance Equivalent) of 35. The high nickel content significantly enhances its resistance to stress corrosion cracking compared to typical austenitic grades. Copper elements in 904L provide additional resistance against sulfuric and other reducing acids, especially in the highly aggressive 'mid concentration' range.
- 904L's corrosion performance sits between the ordinary austenitic grade 316L and the highly alloyed 'super austenitic' grades that contain 6% molybdenum or more. This balance offers versatile use across various demanding applications.
- When compared to molybdenum-free grades like 304L and 310L, 904L demonstrates superior resistance to corrosive environments.
- For optimal resistance against stress corrosion cracking in challenging scenarios, it is recommended that 904L be solution treated after any cold work.
Heat Resistance:
- 904L boasts strong oxidation resistance. However, similar to other highly alloyed grades, it suffers from structural instability at elevated temperatures due to the precipitation of brittle phases like sigma. It is not advisable to use 904L beyond 550°C. According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, the design stress values for 904L are set at 371°C.
Heat Treatment:
- Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat to 1090-1175°C and cool rapidly. Note that this grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment, maintaining its properties through solution treatment alone.
Welding:
- 904L can be effectively welded using all standard techniques. However, its fully austenitic solidification makes it prone to heat cracking, particularly in constrained weldments. Therefore, caution is advised. Pre-heating is generally not recommended, and post-weld heat treatment is typically unnecessary. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified by AS 1554.6 for welding.
Fabrication:
- Due to its high purity and low sulfur content, machining 904L can be more challenging compared to grades designed specifically for machinability. Nevertheless, conventional methods can be used. Achieving a small radius of bend is straightforward and usually done cold. While subsequent annealing is often not required, it should be considered if the fabrication will be used in environments prone to severe stress corrosion cracking.
Typical Applications:
- 904L is ideal for use in environments where there is exposure to aggressive chemicals and harsh conditions. Typical applications include processing plants for sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids, pulp and paper processing, components in gas scrubbing plants, seawater cooling equipment, oil refinery components, and wires in electrostatic precipitators.
Specified Properties:
- According to ASTM A240M, the properties specified are for flat rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. While other products like pipes, tubes, and bars have similar characteristics, they are detailed in their respective specifications.
