CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 exhibits excellent resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking, ensuring long-lasting durability.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Alloy 2205 is suitable for use up to 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to higher temperatures can lead to embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 possesses more than twice the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed state. It can also be provided in the cold-worked condition, achieving yield strength exceeding 160 ksi. The alloy maintains excellent toughness even at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 is capable of cold forming but has a high work-hardening rate, necessitating intermediate anneals. Annealing is also recommended after hot or cold forming to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.
Our forming capabilities are unparalleled, featuring advanced extrusion and cold working assets for tube and pipe manufacturing. We pride ourselves on one of the world's largest pilger mills and a unique hydroforming process for precision fittings.

The Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe, a duplex ferritic-austenitic marvel, boasts a robust composition: 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most popular duplex stainless steel grade, it offers double the yield strength of regular austenitic grades. This exceptional material showcases remarkable fatigue strength and outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion even in aggressive environments.
Manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, the edges may cool faster than the bulk, risking cracks in the cooler regions.
The Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube stands out for its excellent formability across a range of manufacturing processes. However, its high strength can pose challenges, necessitating careful consideration of the higher springback effect when using even the most powerful equipment.
Duplex 2205 presents a slightly greater challenge to machine compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It demands higher cutting forces, thus accelerating tool wear. Here are some precise machining guidelines: A) Utilize a highly robust, rigid machine with equally strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Maintain short tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Avoid unnecessarily long tool nose radii to ensure a sharp carbide edge without compromising strength; D) Plan the machining sequence to ensure the cut depth consistently remains below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
