This steel is meticulously engineered to meet the stringent demands of applications that require unparalleled strength and corrosion resistance. It excels in environments such as chemical processing, the petrochemical sector, and marine applications, where chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking is a critical concern. Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2507 offers exceptional protection against pitting, crevice, and general corrosion.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- The manufacturing process of Duplex 2507 stainless steel mirrors that of other high-alloy steels, initiated in an electric arc furnace where scrap steel is melted with the addition of desired alloys. The molten steel is then transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter, where essential processes such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and gas removal are performed.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is typically introduced to the steel. The steel then moves to the ladle furnace for inclusion adjustment.
- After these preliminary stages, the molten steel progresses to the casting operation, which can yield either individual ingots or continuously produced blooms. These solid steel forms are further refined through reheating, forging, or rolling to achieve the specified thickness. To ensure a uniform internal structure, solution annealing heat treatment is applied, followed by a water quench.
- Fabrication of Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be done through hot or cold forming processes. Hot forming necessitates temperatures between 1024 °C and 1232 °C, with subsequent solution annealing at 1052-1125 °C, followed by rapid water quenching. Cold forming, encompassing techniques like bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing, requires post-heat treatment involving solution annealing and quenching.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is classified as a super duplex stainless steel, characterized by a microstructure that integrates both ferrite and austenite in nearly equal proportions. This blend imparts high corrosion resistance and robust mechanical strength. Nonetheless, duplex steel grades vary in their corrosion resistance. While they all offer good defense against localized corrosion such as pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, the resistance level is contingent on the specific grade and alloy composition. Duplex stainless steels are categorized into four groups based on their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) range, with super duplex stainless steel featuring a PREN of 38 to 45.
