DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution treated and aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
CUSTOMIZED HEAT TREATMENT
- For high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, annealing can be performed at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options. - 1. Anneal: Heat at 1,275 -1,400°F (691 - 760°C) for ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: Heat at 1,000 -1,200°F (538 - 649°C) for 1 to 8 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: Heat at 1,675 -1,750°F (913 - 954°C) for 1 hour, followed by a water quench.
- 4. Aging: Heat at 975 -1,025°F (524 - 552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, followed by air cooling.
In the solution treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of small sections yields optimum properties. Larger section sizes and/or delayed quenching may result in less than optimal properties.
UNMATCHED HARDNESS
Typical hardness in the annealed condition is Rockwell C 30-34, and approximately Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution and aged condition.
EXCEPTIONAL FORGEABILITY/FORMABILITY
- Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum of 35% reduction is recommended to achieve optimum properties.
- Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar presents a challenge to form at room temperature, even when annealed. However, severe forming operations like bending or stretching can be safely executed on annealed material at temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising mechanical properties. For hot sizing or forming, creep forming is effective between 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).
Machinability
Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar can be machined using techniques similar to those for austenitic stainless steel. This requires slow machining speeds, high feed rates, rigid tools, and the extensive use of non-chlorinated cutting fluids to ensure precision and quality.
Weldability
Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod exhibits excellent weldability in the annealed condition or when in the solution and partially aged condition, with post-weld heat treatment enabling aging. It is crucial to avoid contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding should be conducted in an inert gas-filled chamber or with inert gas shielding for the molten metal and adjacent heated zones, using a tail shield. Spot, seam, and flash welding can be done without a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod is susceptible to contamination by hydrogen during improper pickling, as well as by oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treating, brazing, and other processes. Contamination can reduce ductility, negatively impacting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod
Exceptional Corrosion Resistance
Usage Advisory: Avoid using titanium with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
Comprehensive Corrosion Resistance
Grade 2 Titanium Corrosion Rates: Detailed in Table 1. CP Titanium showcases excellent corrosion resistance across various environments including:
- Seawater and Brines: Superior Resistance
- Inorganic Salts: Unmatched Durability
- Moist *** Gas: Reliable Performance
- Alkaline Solutions: Robust Protection
- Oxidizing Acids: Strong Defense
- Organics and Organic Acids: Balanced Resistance
- Sulfur Compounds: Enduring Reliability
Crevice Corrosion: Outstanding Resistance
Crevice Corrosion Details: CP Titanium surpasses stainless steels in salt solutions, remaining unaffected at temperatures below 80°C (176°F), regardless of pH, even under highly chlorinated conditions.
Stress Corrosion Cracking: Superior Resistance
SCC Resistance: Grade 2 Titanium excels in hot chloride solutions and remains immune in seawater conditions.
Erosion Corrosion: Remarkable Durability
Erosion Resistance: Titanium excels against erosion in flowing conditions.
In seawater with velocities reaching up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec), our material exhibits an extraordinary resilience, showing negligible effects from the water's movement. Even when abrasive particles like sand are present, the corrosion impact remains minimal.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Titanium demonstrates remarkable resistance to hydrogen absorption when exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption typically occurs only under these specific conditions:
- 1. pH levels are < 3 or > 12
- 2. Temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C)
- 3. A mechanism for hydrogen generation is present, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys exhibit exceptional immunity to all forms of microbiologically influenced corrosion. Because these alloys do not exhibit toxicity towards marine organisms, biofouling can occur. However, this can be controlled through chlorination or increasing water velocity in heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue
Unlike many other materials, titanium maintains its fatigue performance when exposed to seawater. The fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates are consistent whether tested in air or seawater.
Galvanic Corrosion
In the galvanic series, titanium is positioned near the noble end, close to stainless steels, typically acting as a cathode in combinations with other metals. Thus, titanium is not susceptible to galvanic corrosion and can actually accelerate the corrosion of the other metal. Pairing titanium with more noble metals, such as graphite, further enhances its passivity.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rods stand out due to their consistent fatigue properties in the presence of seawater. The endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain the same whether in air or seawater.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rods are highly weldable with appropriate precautions. Due to titanium's reactivity, an inert gas shield should be applied to both the OD and ID of the rod. The material must also be devoid of any grease or oil contamination.
Typically, Grade 2 Titanium Rods are welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. To minimize the heat-affected zone, low heat input is recommended. Typically, post-weld heat treatment is not necessary for Titanium Rods.
