Leading Stainless Steel Sheet Suppliers in China

Grade 904L:

• Austenitic stainless steel sheet of grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high alloy, low carbon steel. This grade is significantly more resistant to strong reducing acids, especially sulfuric acid, due to the inclusion of copper. Moreover, it has robust defense against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
• This grade boasts outstanding formability and weldability and remains non-magnetic under all conditions. Its exceptional toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures, is attributed to its austenitic structure, making it ideal for demanding applications.
• 904L stainless steel boasts significant amounts of nickel and molybdenum, both premium elements. Traditionally known for its high performance, it is increasingly being replaced by Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205) in many applications, offering similar benefits at a lower cost. As a result, 904L's usage has declined.

Corrosion Resistance:

• Originally developed to resist sulfuric acid, 904L exhibits exceptional resilience under various conditions. With a PRE of 35, it withstands warm seawater and high chloride environments. Its high nickel content significantly enhances resistance to stress corrosion cracking compared to standard austenitic grades. Copper further reinforces its resistance to sulfuric and other reducing acids, especially in highly aggressive 'mid concentration' ranges.
• 904L's corrosion resistance is generally superior to the common austenitic grade 316L but falls between it and the highly alloyed 'super austenitic' grades containing 6% molybdenum.
• In comparison to molybdenum-free grades like 304L and 310L, 904L offers stronger resistance to corrosive elements.
• For optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance in demanding situations, solution treatment of the steel after cold working is recommended.

Heat Resistance:

• 904L exhibits robust oxidation resistance. However, at temperatures exceeding 550°C, structural instability may occur due to the precipitation of brittle phases like sigma. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code advises design stress values for 904L up to 371°C.

Heat Treatment:

• Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat to 1090-1175°C and cool rapidly. Note that 904L cannot be hardened through thermal treatment.

Welding:

• 904L can be welded using all standard techniques. Its fully austenitic solidification makes it prone to heat cracking, particularly in confined welds. No pre-heat is necessary, and post-weld heat treatment is usually not required. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified under AS 1554.6 for 904L welding.

Fabrication:

• Due to its high purity and low sulfur content, 904L does not machine as easily as grades engineered for machinability. Nonetheless, it can be machined using conventional methods. Cold bending to achieve a small radius is straightforward. Subsequent annealing is mostly unnecessary unless severe stress corrosion cracking conditions are expected.

Typical Applications:

• 904L is ideal for a range of applications: sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acid processing plants, pulp and paper processing, gas scrubbing plant components, seawater cooling equipment, oil refinery components, and wires in electrostatic precipitators.

Specified Properties:

• Per ASTM A240M, flat rolled products (plates, sheets, and coils) must meet specific characteristics. Similar properties are also required for related products like pipe, tube, and bar, though slight variations exist in their respective specifications.

Our stainless steel sheets are available in several stunning finishes: brushed, 2B smooth, or 8K mirror finish.

Each stainless steel sheet has a protective film on the finished side, which is easily peeled off post-fabrication or installation, safeguarding the surface from wear and marks. The back side remains unfinished.
