A global leader in stainless steel pipe fabrication services Like most non-stainless steels, martensitic 410 stainless steel pipe can be toughened by a "quench and temper" heat treatment. With a chromium content of at least 11.5%, it effectively resists corrosion, achieving peak resistance when tempered and polished after hardening. This versatile grade of stainless steel pipe is generally hardened yet remains machinable, making it perfect for moderate heat and corrosion-resistant applications where high strength is required. The hallmark of martensitic stainless steels is their exceptional hardness, albeit at the cost of other properties. Poor weldability must be managed during fabrication, necessitating a final heat treatment. Compared to austenitic stainless steels, martensitic types offer lower corrosion resistance, lose ductility at sub-freezing temperatures, and lose strength above freezing due to over-tempering, thus limiting their operating temperature range. Widely utilized, 410 stainless steel pipe embodies 12% chromium, delivering high strength and hardness along with commendable corrosion resistance. Its ductility and forgeability are noteworthy, and it retains magnetism in all states. However, it is not recommended for environments prone to severe corrosion.

Quick Response

  • Corrosion Resistance
    Grade 410 offers resistance to dry air, fresh water, mild bases and acids, foodstuffs, steam, and hot gases.
    For maximum heat and corrosion resistance, the material must be hardened, with optimal performance achieved when the surface is smooth.
    Heat Resistance
    410 stainless steel exhibits good resistance to scaling up to 650°C but is generally not recommended for use between 400 and 580°C, as mechanical properties decline in this range.
    Heat Treatment
    For full annealing, heat to 815-900°C, slow furnace cool to 600°C, then air cool.
    For process annealing, heat to 650-760°C and allow to air cool.
    Welding
    Easily welded by all standard methods, but preheating to 150-260°C and post-weld annealing are necessary to minimize the risk of cracking.
