- This grade of stainless steel, known as 904L, boasts a unique composition that includes minimal carbon and a high copper content, which significantly enhances its resistance to potent acids such as sulphuric acid. The elevated nickel concentration ensures superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, 904L demonstrates exceptional resilience against crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, vulnerabilities that often compromise other steel types. This versatility allows it to excel in harsh environments, including warm waters and chloride exposure, making it suitable for both moderate and severe conditions.
- 904L stainless steel exhibits extraordinary heat resistance, capable of enduring temperatures up to 400°C. It is amenable to heat treatment within a temperature range of 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This heat treatment process serves as an excellent method for hardening 904L steel, thereby enhancing its durability and performance.

Fabrication Data
- Alloy 904L can be seamlessly welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices, ensuring ease of manufacturing and consistency in quality.
Cold Forming
- 904L stainless steel is highly ductile and forms effortlessly. However, the addition of molybdenum and nitrogen necessitates the use of more robust processing equipment compared to standard 304/304L grades, ensuring precision and efficiency in forming.
Hot Forming
- Hot working procedures for 904L require temperatures between 1562°F and 2102°F (850-1150°C). Generally, hot working should be followed by a solution anneal and quench. For 904L, if hot forming concludes above 2012°F (1100°C) with immediate quenching, further heat treatment may be unnecessary. It is critical that the entire workpiece is quenched from temperatures exceeding 2012°F (1100°C). If partial heating or cooling occurs below 2012°F (1100°C), or if cooling is too slow, hot working must always be followed by solution annealing and quenching. Optimal solution annealing for 904L ranges from 1940°F to 2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- The cold work hardening rate of Alloy 904L makes it less machinable than other stainless steels like 410 and 304, necessitating specialized techniques for optimal machining.
Welding
- Alloy 904L is compatible with most traditional welding methods. Its uniform austenitic structure and balanced alloy composition ensure minimal segregation of elements such as molybdenum, chromium, and nickel during solidification post-welding. This reduces the risk of compromised corrosion resistance, making 904L ideal for critical applications. Typically, welding is performed with filler metals matching the base metal's composition, although welding without filler metals is also feasible.
- The recommended welding consumables for 904L include 20 25 CuL covered electrodes and 20 25 CuL wire, ensuring optimal welding performance and integrity.
