GENERAL PROPERTIES

The Duplex 2205 Round Bar, a duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel, is equipped with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel, making it the most popular duplex stainless steel grade. Its yield strength is double that of standard austenitic grades, and it boasts exceptional fatigue strength. Duplex 2205 excels in resisting stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the harshest environments.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

  • The presence of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen ensures high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions
  • Effective against chloride stress corrosion cracking and up to temperatures around 302°F (150°C)
  • Ferrite content enhances performance in caustic environments

HEAT RESISTANCE

  • Similar to other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 offers excellent oxidation resistance at high temperatures
  • However, it can become brittle if exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short periods, making it unsuitable for use above this temperature

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS

  • Exhibits good weldability
  • Generally, welding without filler metal is not recommended as it may result in excessive ferrite content

HEAT TREATMENT

  • Annealing should be done within the temperature range of 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C)
  • Cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but Duplex 2205 does work-harden
  • Special care is required to account for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING

Manufacturers suggest a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). When the workpiece isn't compact, cooler edges may lead to cracking.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING

Duplex 2205 exhibits good formability in various fabrications. However, its high strength can pose challenges. Consideration for higher spring-back due to its strength is necessary, even if equipment power is sufficient.

Duplex stainless steel bar 2205 presents a unique machining challenge compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steel due to its toughness. The increased cutting forces lead to quicker tool wear.
