GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 Round Bar is a highly versatile duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel bar, boasting an impressive 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel content. This exceptional alloy is widely recognized as the most commonly used duplex stainless steel grade. It stands out with twice the yield strength of conventional austenitic grades and superior fatigue strength. Furthermore, Duplex 2205 offers outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the harshest environments.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 exhibits superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L grades in most environments.
- The chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content also endow it with exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in both oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- Remarkably resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and capable of withstanding temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The ferrite presence ensures excellent performance of Duplex 2205 in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Similar to other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 offers commendable oxidation resistance at high temperatures.
- However, it is susceptible to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C) for even short durations, making it unsuitable for use above this temperature.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 boasts good weldability.
- Generally, welding without filler metal is not recommended, as it may lead to excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The optimal annealing temperature range for Duplex 2205 is between 1868 and 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Although it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, Duplex 2205 does work-harden.
- Special considerations are necessary to compensate for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion, to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Leading producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range for Duplex 2205 between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, its edges may cool faster than the bulk, increasing the risk of cracking in the cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
The Duplex 2205 stainless steel is renowned for its excellent formability across a wide range of fabrications. However, its remarkable high strength can present certain challenges during processing. Even when the equipment is adequately powered, it's essential to account for the increased spring-back due to the grade's robust strength. Plan accordingly to ensure superior results.
MACHINABILITY
The Duplex stainless steel bar 2205 presents a slight challenge compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steel in terms of machinability. It demands higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. To achieve optimal machining results, follow these guidelines: A) Use a powerful, rigid machine with a very strong tool and workpiece mount; B) Maintain short tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius isn't unnecessarily long to keep the carbide edge sharp yet strong; D) Sequence the machining process so the depth of cut consistently remains beneath the work-hardened layer from the prior operation.
