ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C) is specified. Prolonged exposure to higher temperatures can lead to embrittlement, affecting performance.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205, in its annealed condition, boasts more than double the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels. It can also be supplied in a cold-worked condition with yield strength exceeding 160 ksi, while maintaining good toughness at temperatures down to -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 can be efficiently cold formed. However, due to its high work-hardening rate, intermediate anneals may be necessary. Post-forming annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.

HEAT RESISTANCE
- Duplex 2205, similar to other duplex stainless steels, demonstrates high oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is prone to embrittlement at temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even with short-term exposure. Therefore, it is not recommended for use beyond this temperature threshold.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 exhibits good weldability.
- Generally, welding without filler metal is not advisable as it may lead to excessive ferrite content.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature range for Duplex 2205 falls between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- This alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment but will work-harden during processing.
- Special considerations are necessary to account for the higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C) for Duplex 2205 steel pipes. If the workpiece is not uniformly heated, cooler edges may *** due to differential temperatures.
