CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 exhibits superior resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking, ensuring reliability.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C) is specified. Prolonged exposure to higher temperatures can lead to embrittlement, affecting performance.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205, in its annealed condition, boasts more than double the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels. It can also be supplied in a cold-worked condition with yield strength exceeding 160 ksi, while maintaining good toughness at temperatures down to -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 can be efficiently cold formed. However, due to its high work-hardening rate, intermediate anneals may be necessary. Post-forming annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.
Our forming capabilities are unmatched, featuring advanced extrusion and cold-working assets for tube and pipe manufacturing. We are proud to house one of the world's largest pilger mills and a unique hydroforming process for precision fittings.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a premium-grade, duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel, enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most frequently used duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength that is double that of standard austenitic grades. With extraordinary fatigue strength, this alloy excels in resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, especially under severe conditions.
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C) for Duplex 2205 steel pipes. If the workpiece is not uniformly heated, cooler edges may *** due to differential temperatures.
The Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube demonstrates remarkable formability across diverse manufacturing processes. However, its high strength can pose challenges, even with robust equipment. The notable springback from this grade's high strength must be meticulously considered.
Duplex 2205 presents a greater challenge to machine compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. This results in higher cutting forces and accelerated tool wear. Consider these machining guidelines for optimal results: A) Employ a powerful, rigid machine with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Maintain short tool extensions to minimize vibration; C) Use the smallest necessary tool nose radius to ensure a sharp carbide edge with sufficient strength; D) Plan the machining sequence so each depth of cut stays below the previous operation's work-hardened layer.
