GENERAL PROPERTIES

Duplex 2205 Round Bar is a remarkable duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel bar containing 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most commonly employed duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength that is twice that of standard austenitic grades. Besides, it possesses exceptional fatigue strength and offers outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even under severe conditions.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

• Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
• This composition also ensures high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
• Capable of withstanding chloride stress corrosion cracking and temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
• The ferrite presence enhances Duplex 2205's performance in caustic environments.

HEAT RESISTANCE

• In line with other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 demonstrates excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
• However, it is subject to embrittlement if exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short durations; hence, it is not recommended for use above this temperature.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS

• Boasts good weldability.
• Generally should not be welded without filler metal to avoid excessive ferrite.

HEAT TREATMENT

• The annealing temperature range is between 1868 and 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
• Cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but Duplex 2205 does undergo work-hardening.
• Special considerations are necessary to compensate for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING

Most Duplex 2205 producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). Non-compact shapes may have cooler edges than the bulk, increasing the risk of cracking in cooler regions.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING

Duplex 2205 boasts exceptional formability across various fabrication methods. Despite its superior strength, which can present challenges, our advanced equipment ensures precise handling. Allowances for increased spring-back due to Duplex 2205's high strength are expertly managed, guaranteeing optimal performance.

MACHINABILITY

Machining Duplex stainless steel bar 2205 requires more effort compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steel. Higher cutting forces result in quicker tool wear. To achieve the best results, follow these guidelines: A) Utilize a robust, powerful machine with a strong tool and workpiece mount; B) Maintain short tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is minimal, maintaining a sharp carbide edge with adequate strength; D) Sequence machining operations to keep the depth of cut below the work-hardened layer from previous operations.
