CORROSION RESISTANCE:
316L Stainless Steel Rod
- Boasting superior resistance compared to 304, our 316 stainless steel excels across a myriad of atmospheric conditions and corrosive media, thanks to its enhanced chromium.
and enriched molybdenum content. - While highly robust, it may experience pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and stress corrosion cracking above approximately 122°F (50°C).
- Resilient to potable water with up to 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, which reduces to around 500mg/L at
140°F (60°C). - Often hailed as the 'marine grade stainless steel,' although it is not impervious to warm seawater.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Our 316 stainless steel delivers commendable oxidation resistance, enduring intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
- Grade 316L is particularly adept at resisting carbide precipitation.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:
- Exceptional weldability by all standard fusion methods, whether using filler metals or not.
- For Grade 316, post-weld annealing is essential for maximum corrosion resistance in heavy welded sections, but this step is unnecessary for Grade 316L.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Ideal annealing occurs between 1900 and 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
- Note that it cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
- Special care is required to compensate for its higher thermal expansion coefficient to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- Producers typically recommend a forging temperature cap between 2100°F and 2300°F.
- Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C) for optimal results.
- To achieve superior corrosion resistance, ensure forgings undergo a final anneal.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- Renowned for its toughness and ductility, the 316/316L stainless steel rod is easily cold-worked. Processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, and deep drawing,
bending, and more can be executed with ease. - Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to alleviate stress.
MACHINEABILITY:
- Machining 316/316L stainless steel rods is somewhat more challenging than Type 304 due to its toughness.
- These rods exhibit tough and strong chip characteristics during machining.
- Utilize chip breakers and curlers for best results.
- Employ large tools and ample cutting fluid to optimize machining.
- Heavy positive feeds at low speeds are advisable as 316/316L tends to work-harden quickly.
