While it boasts impressive oxidation resistance and excellent formability, its lower chromium content translates to relatively reduced corrosion resistance compared to grades 304, 430, or 439, yet it surpasses mild steel. Versatile in its manufacturing capabilities, Grade 409 can be roll-formed, stretch-bent, deep-drawn, and press-formed. Post-annealing, it retains its mechanical integrity without hardening, making it ideal for warm and roll forming techniques such as press or stretch bending. Notably, this stainless steel has moderate weldability, though it's not suitable for shock-loaded structures due to grain growth in the heat-affected zone, affecting mechanical quality. Predominantly, Grade 409 finds its calling in the automotive industry, particularly in exhaust systems, where it excels in resisting corrosion from exhaust gases and enduring high-temperature environments.
