CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • POSCO 17-4 pH Stainless Steel Round Rod offers superior resistance to corrosion, outperforming standard hardenable stainless steels.
  • Its corrosion resistance is comparable to Alloy 304 in most environments.
  • The alloy exhibits strong corrosion resistance in various chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries.
  • However, it may be susceptible to crevice or pitting attack if exposed to stagnant seawater for extended periods.

WELDABILITY:

  • It can be effectively welded using most common fusion and resistance welding techniques.
  • Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended for this material.
  • Generally, no pre-heating is required before welding.
  • Ensure that the inter-pass temperature does not exceed 248°F.
  • Optimal toughness in the weld can be achieved by performing a complete heat treatment post-welding.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • This alloy exhibits excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F.
  • Prolonged exposure to high temperatures may reduce toughness in the precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • For forging, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F and hold for half an hour per inch of thickness.
  • The preferred temperature range for hot forming is between 650-900°F, while the material remains austenitic.
  • To ensure optimal hardening, re-heat treat the forgings at 1875-1925°F.
  • Cool the forgings to below 90°F to achieve grain refinement.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Alloy 17-4 is best suited for mild cold forming operations as it is hard in the annealed (solution treated) state.
  • For more severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to avoid cracking.
  • A bend radius greater than 7 times the material thickness (7T) is often required.
  • Post-cold forming, re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is advised to enhance stress corrosion resistance.

MACHINABILITY:

  • This alloy can be machined in both its solution-treated and precipitation-hardened conditions.
