General Properties
- 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel offering excellent overall corrosion resistance. It provides high resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to chromium carbide precipitation temperatures of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C). The alloy resists oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and boasts superior creep and stress rupture properties compared to 304 and 304L steel pipes, along with excellent low temperature toughness.
- Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S 32109) features a higher carbon content (0.04 - 0.10), designed to enhance creep resistance and strength at temperatures exceeding 1000°F (537°C). Often, the carbon content enables dual certification of the plate.
- Alloy 321 can only be strengthened through cold working, not heat treatment. It is easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication techniques.

Corrosion Resistance
- Exhibits good general corrosion resistance comparable to 304.
- Developed for use in the chromium carbide precipitation range of 1800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
- Suitable for use in most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures.
- Can be used in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.
- Effective in up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.
- Resists polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon service.
- Used in chloride or fluoride-free caustic solutions at moderate temperatures.
- Not recommended for use in chloride solutions or sulfuric acid service, even in small concentrations.
Processing
Alloy 321/H can be readily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices.
Hot Forming
- Recommended working temperatures are 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C) for forging, upsetting, and other hot working processes.
- Not suitable for work at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
- Material should be water quenched or fully annealed after working to restore maximum corrosion resistance.
Cold Forming
- Highly ductile and easily forms.
Welding
- Readily weldable by most standard processes.
- Post-weld heat treatment is not required.
Machining
- The hardening rate of 321 makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel, but comparable to 304.
