GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable stainless steel that boasts exceptional corrosion resistance and formability, alongside solid mechanical properties. Its impressive resistance makes it ideal for various chemical applications, though it is most commonly used in automobile trim and appliance components.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of Grade 430, available in bar form for automatic screw machines. Grade 434 serves as the molybdenum-bearing counterpart, retaining Grade 430's beneficial traits with enhanced corrosion resistance due to the molybdenum content.
- ASTM A240/A240M delineates the specifications for Grade 430 in flat rolled products such as plate, sheet, and coil. Other forms like forgings and bars possess similar yet distinct properties per their specifications. ASTM A582 outlines the properties of Grade 430F for bar products.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 showcases commendable resistance to a variety of corrosive environments, including certain organic acids. Its corrosion resistance peaks when polished or ground, comparable to Grade 304. Like other ferritic grades, it offers high resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The free-machining Grade 430F displays reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high-sulfur, free-machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 withstands oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Long exposure to 400-600°C may cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be mitigated by annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, maintain for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then cool slowly in a furnace to 600°C and air cool quickly. Slow cooling within 540-400°C may lead to embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C followed by air cooling or water quenching.
- This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Preheat at a steady temperature of 150-200°C if welding is required to ensure optimal results.
- Post-weld annealing at 790-815°C can effectively relieve embrittlement in both the weld metal and heat-affected zones.
- Note that grain refinement will not occur under these conditions.
MACHINING:
- This material is easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades such as 304.
- However, there remains a tendency for galling and material pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Lightly drawn bars are significantly easier to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free-machining variant of 430, offers exceptional ease of machining.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate facilitates easier bending and forming compared to grade 304.
- However, lower ductility limits the feasibility of very severe operations.
- For severe bends, ensure the bend axis is perpendicular to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is indeed achievable.
