Type 201 stainless steel is a cost-effective austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy designed to conserve nickel. As an economical alternative to traditional Cr-Ni stainless steels like 301 and 304, the nickel in Type 201 is substituted with manganese and nitrogen. Although it can't be hardened by heat treatment, it achieves high tensile strength through cold working. Initially non-magnetic in the annealed state, it becomes magnetic after cold working. This mid-range stainless steel is widely used in appliances, kitchen utensils, catering equipment, automotive parts, carriages, sinks, and window trims. Its robustness makes it suitable for these applications, though it's less ideal for outdoor structural use due to its susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion from seawater exposure.
