Type 321 stainless steel is a high-performance austenitic steel, boasting increased titanium and carbon content over Type 304. This unique composition provides superior corrosion and oxidation resistance, coupled with exceptional toughness even in cryogenic conditions. The addition of titanium prevents harmful carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of welds, offers protection against intergranular corrosion, and reduces embrittlement in high-risk weld areas. Ideal for applications exposed to carbide precipitation temperatures (800°F-1500°F) and corrosive environments, 321 stainless steel maintains its properties through minimization of chromium carbide formation at grain boundaries. This material is easily weldable, rarely requiring post-weld annealing, and responds well to cold work hardening.

GENERAL PROPERTIES

• 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel offering excellent overall corrosion resistance. With superior resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to the chromium carbide precipitation temperature range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C), this alloy withstands oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C). It boasts better creep and stress rupture properties compared to 304 and 304L steel pipes, while also maintaining robust low-temperature toughness.
• Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S 32109) is an enriched carbon-content version (0.04 - 0.10) engineered for enhanced creep resistance and strength at temperatures exceeding 1000°F (537°C). Often, the carbon content facilitates dual certification.
• Alloy 321 can be toughened solely through cold working, as opposed to heat treatment. It is readily weldable and can be processed using standard fabrication techniques.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

• 321 stainless steel demonstrates commendable general corrosion resistance comparable to 304.
• Developed for usage within the chromium carbide precipitation range of 1800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
• Effective in most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures.
• Suitable for use in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.

PROCESSING

HOT FORMING

• Recommended working temperatures for forging, upsetting, and other hot working processes are between 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C).
• This alloy is unsuitable for working at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
• To achieve maximum corrosion resistance, the material must be water quenched or fully annealed post-working.

COLD FORMING

• Highly ductile and forms with ease.

WELDING

• Easily welded by most standard processes.
• Post-weld heat treatment is unnecessary.

MACHINING
