Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy designed to conserve nickel. It serves as a cost-effective alternative to traditional Cr-Ni stainless steels like 301 and 304. By substituting nickel with manganese and nitrogen, Type 201 cannot be hardened through heat treatment but achieves high tensile strength via cold working. Initially non-magnetic in its annealed state, it becomes magnetic after cold working. Widely used in appliances, cookers, sinks, kitchen utensils, and catering equipment, 201 stainless steel also finds applications in automotive parts, fixtures, carriages, and window trim due to its structural strength. However, it is less suitable for outdoor structural uses due to susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially from seawater exposure.
