CORROSION RESISTANCEAlloy 2205 has excellent resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCEThe ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code places an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Exposure to temperatures above this for extended periods results in embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIESAlloy 2205 has more than twice the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed condition. It can also be provided in the cold-worked condition with yield strength exceeding 160 ksi. It maintains good toughness at temperatures down to -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITYAlloy 2205 can be cold formed. However, it has a high work-hardening rate, so intermediate anneals may be required. Annealing is also recommended subsequent to hot forming or cold forming in order to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a duplex ferritic austenitic stainless steel containing 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum and 5-6% nickel. It is the most commonly used duplex stainless steel grade and has a yield strength twice that of regular austenitic grades. It also has excellent fatigue strength and has excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion and general corrosion in severe conditions.
Most duplex 2205 steel pipe manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, the edge may be much cooler than the bulk, and there is a risk of cracking in the cooler area.
Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube exhibits good formability in a variety of manufacturing processes. The high strength of Duplex 2205 can be problematic. Even if the equipment is powerful enough, the higher springback caused by the high strength of this grade must be taken into account.
Duplex 2205 is slightly more difficult to machine than 300 series austenitic stainless steels. Higher cutting forces are required, so the tool wears more quickly. Here are some machining guidelines: A) Use a powerful, rigid machine with very strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Keep tool extensions short to minimize vibration; C) Do not make the tool nose radius longer than necessary so that the carbide has a sharp edge while still providing adequate strength; D) Design the machining sequence so that the depth of cut is always below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
