Commonly used for high temperature environments are the chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel pipes 309, 309S, and 309H. These grades of stainless steel pipe are very resistant to oxidation, heat, and corrosion due to their high chromium and nickel content. In addition, this stainless steel pipe has excellent strength at both room and elevated temperatures. Carbon content is the main difference between 309 stainless steel and 309S stainless steel pipe. The carbon content in 309S is much less, which reduces carbide precipitation and improves weldability. The carbon composition of 309H is also different from 309 plate. The higher carbon concentration in 309H than 309 makes it more resistant to creep.
