CORROSION RESISTANCE:
316L Stainless steel rod
- Renowned for its superior corrosion resistance, 316L stainless steel outperforms 304 in various atmospheric environments and corrosive media.
This enhanced durability is attributed to its increased chromium and molybdenum content. - However, it is susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments, and stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 122°F (50°C).
- It is generally resistant to potable water with chloride levels up to 1000mg/L at ambient temperatures, reducing to 500mg/L at 140°F (60°C).
140°F (60°C). - Often referred to as 'marine grade stainless steel,' it still isn't fully resistant to warm sea water.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance with intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
- Grade 316L is particularly noted for its resistance to carbide precipitation.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:
- 316L stainless steel offers superior weldability with all standard fusion methods, both with and without filler metals.
- Post-weld annealing is necessary for Grade 316 to optimize corrosion resistance but is not required for Grade 316L.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- The annealing process should be performed at temperatures ranging from 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
- Note: 316L cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
- Special care is needed to compensate for its high thermal expansion coefficient to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- For optimal results, a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F is recommended.
- Forging should never occur below 1700°F (927°C). Final annealing ensures the best corrosion resistance.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- 316/316L stainless steel rods are exceptionally tough and ductile, making them ideal for cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
and bending without any significant difficulty. - Parts that undergo severe cold forming should be annealed to remove residual stresses.
MACHINEABILITY:
- Machining Type 316/316L stainless steel is more challenging than Type 304 due to its toughness.
- The material produces strong, tough chips that require chip breakers and curlers.
- Utilize large tools and ample cutting fluids to improve machining efficiency.
- Consider using heavy positive feeds at low speeds to prevent rapid work hardening.
- 316/316L work hardens quickly.
