With robust oxidation resistance and excellent formability, 409's lower chromium concentration leads to moderate corrosion resistance, trailing grades like 304, 430, or 439, yet surpassing mild steel. Ideal for roll forming, stretch bending, deep drawing, and press forming, the 409 grade maintains its integrity post-annealing without hardening when subjected to cold treatments or forming processes like press or stretch bending. While 409 stainless steel exhibits decent weldability, it is not advisable for shock-loaded structures due to grain growth in the heat-affected zone, affecting mechanical quality. Predominantly utilized in automotive exhaust systems, the 409 tube's mechanical properties shine in the automotive and agricultural sectors, offering commendable resistance to exhaust gases and high-temperature environments. Although its mechanical prowess is paramount, it is not recommended for decorative applications due to lesser aesthetic qualities.
