CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • Demonstrates superior resistance to corrosive attacks, surpassing any standard hardenable stainless steels.
  • Performs comparably to Alloy 304 across most media applications.
  • Exhibits robust corrosion resistance in specific chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries.
  • May experience crevice or pitting corrosion if exposed to stagnant seawater for prolonged periods.

WELDABILITY:

  • Successfully weldable through most conventional fusion and resistance techniques.
  • Not recommended for oxyacetylene welding due to material properties.
  • Typically, pre-heating is unnecessary for welding.
  • Ensure inter-pass temperatures do not exceed 248°F to maintain material integrity.
  • Enhanced toughness can be achieved in welds following a comprehensive heat treatment process.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Shows excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F.
  • Extended exposure to high temperatures may reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • For forging, uniformly heat to 2150-2200°F and hold for 30 minutes per inch of thickness.
  • Ideal temperature range for hot forming is between 650-900°F while maintaining an austenitic structure.
  • To optimize hardening, forgings should be re-heat treated at 1875-1925°F.
  • Cool down forgings to below 90°F to achieve grain refinement.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Given its hardness in the annealed state, Alloy 17-4 is suited for mild cold forming operations.
  • For more severe cold working, heat treatment to condition H1150 is recommended to prevent cracking.
  • A bend radius greater than 7T is typically necessary for cold forming.
  • Re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature post-cold forming improves stress corrosion resistance.

MACHINABILITY:

  • Capable of being machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening states.
