Type 321 stainless steel is an exemplary austenitic steel. It shares many of the hallmark properties of Type 304, but with enhanced titanium and carbon content. This results in superior resistance to corrosion and oxidation, coupled with exceptional toughness even in cryogenic environments. The titanium in 321 stainless steel confers numerous benefits: it prevents harmful carbide precipitation in the heat affected zone (HAZ) of welds, offers partial protection against intergranular corrosion, and reduces embrittlement in high-risk welding areas. 321H stainless steel is particularly suited for applications involving exposure to carbide precipitation temperatures (800°F-1500°F) and corrosive atmospheres. Like 304 stainless steel, 321 contains more nickel and is stabilized with titanium, which interacts preferentially with carbon, preventing chromium carbides at grain boundaries and maintaining corrosion resistance during critical temperature exposure. This grade is also highly responsive to cold working, weldable with minimal need for post-weld annealing, and performs outstandingly in various corrosive conditions.

GENERAL PROPERTIES

  • 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel renowned for its outstanding overall corrosion resistance. It stands out with high resistance to intergranular corrosion even after exposure to the chromium carbide precipitation temperature range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C). The alloy can withstand oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and exhibits superior creep and stress rupture properties compared to 304 and 304L steel pipes. Additionally, it maintains impressive low-temperature toughness.
  • Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S 32109) is an enhanced version of this alloy, featuring a higher carbon content (0.04 - 0.10). This modification is specifically designed to provide increased creep resistance and strength at temperatures exceeding 1000°F (537°C). Often, the carbon content allows for dual certification of the plate.
  • Alloy 321 achieves toughness exclusively through cold working, as it is not amenable to heat treatment. It is readily weldable and can be processed using conventional shop fabrication methods.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

  • Exhibits excellent general corrosion resistance that is comparable to 304 stainless steel.
  • Developed for optimal performance within the chromium carbide precipitation range of 1800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).

  • Suitable for use in pure phosphoric acid at low temperatures.
  • Operable in up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.

PROCESSING

Alloy 321/H can be easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices.

HOT FORMING

  • Working temperatures of 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C) are ideal for forging, upsetting, and other hot working processes.
  • Not suitable for operations at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
  • Material must be water-quenched or fully annealed post-working to restore maximum corrosion resistance.

COLD FORMING

  • Highly ductile and easily formable.

WELDING

  • Readily weldable using most standard processes.
  • Post-weld heat treatment is unnecessary.

MACHINING

  • The hardening rate of 321 makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel but comparable to 304.
