CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Generally more robust than 304 in various atmospheric environments and numerous corrosive media due to increased chromium
  and molybdenum content.
• Prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and to stress corrosion cracking above approximately 122°F (50°C).
• Deemed resistant to potable water with up to about 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, decreasing to about 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Often regarded as the 'marine grade stainless steel' - yet it is not resistant to warm seawater.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L showcases superior resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Demonstrates excellent weldability using all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals.
• Heavy welded sections in Grade 316 necessitate post-weld annealing for maximum corrosion resistance, which is not required for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• Annealing temperature range is from 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
• Special considerations are necessary to counteract a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most producers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C). Optimal
• corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings receive a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• 316/316L types are extremely tough and ductile, allowing for easy cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., without difficulty.
• Severely cold-formed parts should undergo annealing to relieve stresses.

MACHINABILITY:

• Type 316/316L is somewhat more challenging to machine than Type 304 due to its toughness.
• 316/316L machines produce tough and strong chip characteristics.
• Chip breakers and curlers are recommended.
• Utilize as large a tool as possible along with substantial amounts of cutting fluid.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds since 316/316L work hardens rapidly.
