Type 904L is a high alloy austenitic stainless steel that is renowned for its corrosion resistance. The 904L alloy (UNS N08904) is a super austenitic stainless steel with moderate to high resistance in various process settings. Thanks to its high chromium and nickel content, combined with molybdenum and copper, it guarantees excellent corrosion resistance. Boasting a highly alloyed chemistry with 25% nickel and 4.5% molybdenum, 904L surpasses 316L and 317L molybdenum reinforced stainless steels in resisting chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and general corrosion. Originally crafted to endure dilute sulfuric acid conditions, it also withstands most organic and inorganic acids, including hot phosphoric acid. - This exceptional grade of stainless steel contains a minimal amount of carbon, which enhances its resistance to various strong acids, particularly sulphuric acid, due to its high copper content. Its substantial nickel concentration offers superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, 904L stainless steel exhibits remarkable resilience against crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking that often impairs other steel types. Ideal for use in a variety of challenging environments, including exposure to warm waters and chloride, it is versatile enough for both moderate and aggressive conditions.
- 904L stainless steel boasts extraordinary heat resistance, enduring temperatures as high as 400 degrees Celsius. It is also highly heat-treatable, with effective treatments conducted at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175 degrees Celsius followed by rapid cooling. What is 904L used for?

Fabrication Data
- Alloy 904L is easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices, making it an adaptable choice for diverse manufacturing needs.
Cold Forming
- 904L stainless steel is highly ductile and easily formable. However, the addition of molybdenum and nitrogen means more powerful processing equipment may be required compared to standard 304/304L grades, ensuring the material can be effectively shaped and utilized.
Hot Forming
- Hot working of 904L requires temperatures between 1562 and 2102°F (850-1150°C). Typically, hot working should be followed by solution annealing and quenching. For 904L, if hot forming ends at a temperature above 2012°F (1100°C) and the material is quenched immediately, further heat treatment may not be necessary. It is crucial to quench the entire workpiece from temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C). If any part is heated or cooled below 2012°F (1100°C) or if cooling is too slow, hot working must be followed by solution annealing and quenching. The solution annealing range for 904L is 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- Due to its cold work hardening rate, Alloy 904L is less machinable compared to other stainless steels like 410 and 304, necessitating more robust machining practices.
Welding
- Alloy 904L is compatible with most conventional welding methods. Its uniform austenitic structure and balanced distribution of alloying elements like molybdenum, chromium, and nickel reduce the risk of deleterious segregation during solidification post-welding. Typically, 904L is welded using filler metals of the same composition, although welding without filler metal is also feasible.
- Welding consumables for 904L include 20 25 CuL covered electrodes and 20 25 CuL wire, ensuring high-quality welds that maintain the material's superior properties.
