Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy designed to conserve nickel. As a cost-effective alternative to Cr-Ni stainless steels like 301 and 304, 201 replaces nickel with manganese and nitrogen. While it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, it achieves high tensile strength through cold working. Non-magnetic in the annealed condition, it becomes magnetic after cold working. This mid-range stainless steel is extensively used in appliances, cookers, sinks, kitchen utensils, catering equipment, automotive parts, fixtures, carriages, and window trims due to its structural strength. However, it is less ideal for outdoor structural applications due to susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion from seawater.
