Ti 6Al-4V (Grade 5 Titanium) is the most utilized titanium alloy, accounting for over 50% of total titanium usage. Typically annealed, it operates up to 400°C (750°F) and is welded using matching or ELI filler wire. It offers significantly higher strength and better stiffness than commercially pure titanium tubes, although it has about 60% lower thermal conductivity. It is heat treatable for enhanced strength and performance. The advantages include robust formability, low density, and exceptional corrosion resistance.
This grade perfectly balances strength, corrosion resistance, weldability, and machinability. It's extensively used in military aircraft, aviation, rocket parts, precision-guided components, armor, ship equipment, military vacuum equipment, and more. Close variants like 6-4 ELI are used in surgical implants. Used in applications up to 400°C, it enhances ductility and toughness in cold conditions. Typically annealed, it is easy to heat treat for increased strength across various applications. Ti 6Al-4V titanium seamless tube's wide-ranging properties make it ideal at temperatures between -210°C to 400°C. It combines high strength and toughness, with excellent welding and processing characteristics.

Ti-6Al-4V- Grade 5 Titanium Tube
- Titanium Alloy-(UNS R56400)
INTRODUCTION
- DAXUN's Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) stands as the premier titanium alloy, celebrated for its duplex alpha+beta composition. Leveraging aluminum as an alpha stabilizer and vanadium as a beta stabilizer, this high-strength alloy thrives in cryogenic conditions up to 800°F (427°C). Ideal for annealing, solution treatment, and ageing, it finds critical applications in jet engines (compressor blades, discs, rings), aerospace (fuselage, space capsules), and defense (pressure containers, *** cases, helicopter rotor hubs, fasteners). Its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio also makes it indispensable for crucial forgings.
- The alloy's journey begins with vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). Subsequent remelting is performed through one or two vacuum arc steps to ensure purity and quality.
SPECIFICATIONS
• ASTE B338 - Standard for heat-treatable titanium tubes
• AMS 4928 - Specifications for annealed forgings and forging stock
• AMS 4965 - Guidelines for solution-treated and aged forgings
• AMS 4967 - Parameters for annealed, heat-treatable forgings
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
- Melting Range: 2,800-3,000°F (1,538 - 1,649°C)
- Density: 0.160 lbs/cu. in.; 4.47 gm/cc
- Beta Transus Temperature: 1830°F (± 25°); 999°C (± 14°)
HEAT TREATMENT
- Achieve optimal hardness, tensile, and fatigue strength with annealing between 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
- DAXUN 6-4™, Grade 5 Alloy offers versatile heat treatment options.
- 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, then air or furnace cool.

- 4. Aging Treatment: 975 -1,025°F (524 - 552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, then air-cool.
- Achieve superior properties in the solution-treated and aged condition. Rapidly quench small cross sections; larger sections or delays may result in suboptimal properties.
Larger section sizes or quench delays can lead to properties that are less than optimal.
HARDNESS
Typical hardness ranges from Rockwell C 30-34 in the annealed condition, to Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution-treated and aged state.
FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes should be forged at 1,750°F (954°C), ending at 1,450°F (788°C). For best results, a reduction of at least 35% is recommended.
- Crafted to meet the highest standards in defense and aerospace applications, the DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy presents significant challenges in forming at room temperature. Even when annealed, it requires extreme operations like bending or stretching to be performed at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C), ensuring its mechanical properties remain unaltered. For precise hot sizing or forming, creep forming can be employed within the temperature range of 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).
MACHINABILITY
- Our premier DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is designed for machinability akin to austenitic stainless steels, necessitating slow speeds, heavy feeds, and rigid
tooling. Utilize substantial amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluid for optimal results.
WELDABILITY
- The DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube boasts exceptional weldability in both annealed and solution plus partially aged forms, with aging.
- conducted during post-weld heat treatment. It is crucial to avoid contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding is best performed in an inert gas-filled chamber or with an inert gas tail shield applied to the molten metal and adjacent hot zone. Techniques like spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding can be executed without a protective environment.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
- To maintain its high-quality characteristics, the DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy must be handled carefully to avoid hydrogen contamination from improper pickling and absorption of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes like forging, heat treatment, and brazing. Contamination can lead to reduced ductility, affecting notch sensitivity and forming properties.
