Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel that boasts superior oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. ASTM A240 outlines three subcategories of Type 409 stainless steel: UNS S40910, UNS S40920, and UNS S40930, each with specific Ti or Nb stabilization requirements. Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, any of these compositions may be supplied as UNS S40900. This steel is also available in enhanced formability grades, commonly referred to in the industry as 'High Performance' or 'Ultra Form'.

Grade 409
- Grade 409: The Ultimate Titanium-Stabilized Ferritic Stainless Steel. This remarkable general-purpose chromium stainless steel is predominantly utilized in automotive exhaust systems, offering a balanced blend of mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and weldability, even at elevated temperatures. Ideal for applications where performance trumps aesthetics.
- Meet ASTM Standards: The ASTM A240M for flat rolled steel now employs S40910, S40920, and S40930 as specialized sub-grades, advancing beyond the traditional Grade 409.
- Advanced Stabilization: These sub-grades are fortified to varying extents with titanium, niobium, or their combination. Any can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). Note that ASTM A268M exclusively lists the standard Grade 409 for tubing applications.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Outstanding Corrosion Resistance: Grade 409 withstands both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. A protective light surface rust forms in most environments, halting further corrosion but unsuitable for cosmetic uses. Its resistance ranks alongside 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (410), though it's outperformed by the 17% chromium Grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- Exceptional Heat Resistance: Grade 409 withstands scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and continuous service up to 675°C. Temperature limits may vary depending on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- Optimal Heat Treatment: For annealing, heat to 790-900°C and air cool. Note that this grade cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
Welding
- Superior Weldability: Pre-heat to 150-260°C is recommended. Although Grade 409 or 430 electrodes or filler rods can be used, Grade 309 rods/electrodes are pre-qualified by AS 1554.6. These austenitic fillers ensure a more ductile weld.
- Enhanced Post-Weld Ductility: Post-weld annealing between 760-815°C significantly enhances weld ductility.
Efficient Welding: Post-weld annealing is unnecessary for small sections. Automotive exhaust tubing is commonly welded without filler metal (autogenously).
Precision Welding: To mitigate grain formation impacts, minimize the heat applied during welding.

- Standard Specifications: ASTM A268M defines parameters for annealed Grade 409 tubing, while ASTM A240M outlines compositions for coil and sheet applications. Specifications for other products may vary but generally align closely.

- Effortless Forming: Grade 409 stainless steel can be easily cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn. Its formability rivals that of carbon steel.
