CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• With enhanced chromium and molybdenum content, our 316 stainless steel offers superior resistance over 304 in a wide range of atmospheric environments and corrosive media.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• Annealing should be done within a temperature range of 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• This grade cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
• Special care should be taken to compensate for its higher thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Manufacturers advise a maximum forging temperature range of 2100°F to 2300°F.
• Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C).
• Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved with a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• Types 316/316L, known for their toughness and ductility, can be easily cold worked-including roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, and more-with no issues.
• Severely cold-formed parts should undergo annealing to relieve stress.

MACHINEABILITY:

• Due to its toughness, machining Type 316/316L is more challenging than Type 304.
• Both types generate tough and strong chip characteristics.
• Usage of chip breakers and curlers is recommended.
• Employ large tools and ample cutting fluid.
• Heavy positive feeds at low speeds are advisable, given 316/316L's rapid work hardening.
