Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel offering superior oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel, renowned for its high chromium content. Primarily used in automotive exhaust systems, it excels in applications where mechanical attributes, corrosion resistance, and weldability are more critical than aesthetic appeal, especially at elevated temperatures.
- ASTM standards, such as ASTM A240M for flat rolled steel, now utilize S40910, S40920, and S40930 as specific 'sub-grades' instead of the general Grade 409 designation.
- These grades are stabilized to varying degrees with titanium, niobium, or a combination of both. Any of these can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). ASTM A268M specifically covers standard Grade 409 for tubing applications.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 demonstrates resistance to both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. In many environments, it develops a light surface rust that shields against further corrosion, though it's unsuitable for cosmetic purposes. Corrosion resistance is akin to 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (410), but less than the 17% chromium Grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- Grade 409 resists scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and in continuous service up to 675°C, though these temperatures can vary based on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- Annealing involves heating to 790-900°C followed by air cooling. This grade is not hardenable through heat treatment.
Welding
- Grade 409 is easy to weld, although pre-heating to 150-260°C is recommended. While Grade 409 or 430 electrodes or filler rods are suitable, Grade 309 rods or electrodes are pre-qualified per AS 1554.6 for producing more ductile welds.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C enhances weld ductility.
Welding small sections does not necessitate post-weld annealing. Automotive exhaust tubing is typically welded without filler metal (autogenously).
Minimizing heat input during welding is essential to prevent grain formation.

Specified Properties
- ASTM A268M defines the properties of Grade 409 for annealed tubing, while ASTM A240M covers the composition of additional grades for coil and sheet applications. Specifications for other items may have similar but not identical properties.
FORMING:
- Grade 409 stainless steel can be easily cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn. Its formability is very similar to that of carbon steel.
