  • Our High Strength 17-4 pH Stainless Steel Round Rod is engineered to withstand corrosive attacks more effectively than any of the standard hardenable stainless steels, ensuring prolonged durability.
  • It offers corrosion resistance comparable to Alloy 304 when used in most media, delivering reliable performance.
  • Ideal for use in the chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries, where corrosion resistance is paramount.
  • Note: Exposure to stagnant sea water can lead to crevice or pitting attack over time.

WELDABILITY:

  • Can be successfully welded using most common fusion and resistance welding methods, ensuring versatility in application.
  • Please avoid joining by oxyacetylene welding to maintain material integrity.
  • Generally, pre-heating is not required, simplifying the welding process.
  • Ensure inter-pass temperature is limited to 248°F to maintain optimal material properties.
  • Achieve better toughness in the weld by performing a complete heat treatment post-welding.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Exhibits excellent resistance to oxidation at temperatures up to approximately 1100°F, providing reliability in high-temperature environments.
  • Be aware that long-term exposure to elevated temperatures can reduce toughness in the precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • For forging, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F and maintain for half an hour per inch of material.
  • The preferred temperature range for hot forming is between 650-900°F, keeping the steel austenitic for optimal forming.
  • To ensure the best condition for hardening, re-heat treat the forgings at 1875-1925°F.
  • Cool the forgings to below 90°F to achieve grain refinement and optimal properties.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • In its annealed condition, Alloy 17-4 is limited to mild cold forming operations due to its hardness.
  • For more severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to prevent cracking.
  • A bend radius in excess of 7T is often required to prevent material failure.
  • To enhance stress corrosion resistance after cold forming, re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is recommended.

MACHINABILITY:

  • Capable of being machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions, offering flexibility in manufacturing.
