CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• With its enhanced chromium and molybdenum content, 316 Stainless Steel exhibits superior resistance compared to 304 in various atmospheric conditions and numerous corrosive environments.
  This formidable alloy offers increased durability.
• While highly resistant, it remains susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride settings and stress corrosion cracking beyond 122°F (50°C).
• It is deemed resistant to potable water containing up to 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, decreasing to 500mg/L at 140°F (60°C).
  Demonstrates excellent tolerance to potable water with chlorides.
• Often hailed as the "marine grade stainless steel," it should be noted that it is not impervious to warm seawater corrosion.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• 316 Stainless Steel maintains impressive oxidation resistance with intermittent usage up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L offers superior resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Boasting exceptional weldability, it is compatible with all standard fusion techniques, both with and without filler metals.
• For optimal corrosion resistance in heavily welded sections of Grade 316, post-weld annealing is necessary, unlike Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing temperature ranges from 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• This grade cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
• Special measures are essential to accommodate a higher thermal expansion coefficient to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Manufacturers typically recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C) for best results.
• Optimum corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• 316/316L types, known for their toughness and ductility, are easy to cold work through roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing, bending, and more.
  Even with severe cold forming, these alloys perform effortlessly.
• Annealing severely cold-formed parts is recommended to alleviate stresses.

MACHINABILITY:

• Due to its toughness, Type 316/316L is comparatively harder to machine than Type 304.
• These types produce tough, strong chip characteristics.
• The use of chip breakers and curlers is advised.
• Employing the largest tool possible with ample cutting fluid is highly recommended.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds as 316/316L work hardens rapidly.
