CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 offers superior resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets a maximum temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to temperatures above this threshold can lead to embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 boasts over twice the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed state. It can also be supplied in a cold-worked condition with a yield strength surpassing 160 ksi, while maintaining excellent toughness at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 can be efficiently cold formed. However, due to its high work-hardening rate, intermediate anneals might be necessary. Post forming, annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.

Celebrated as the most commonly utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength twice that of conventional austenitic grades. Duplex 2205 excels in fatigue strength and offers outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion even under the most severe conditions.
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece is not uniformly heated, the edges may cool faster, increasing the risk of cracking.
Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube showcases exceptional formability across a broad spectrum of manufacturing processes. However, its high strength poses challenges. Even with adequately powerful equipment, the increased springback inherent to this grade must be meticulously accounted for.
Duplex 2205 presents slightly greater machining challenges compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steels. Higher cutting forces are requisite, thus accelerating tool wear. Key machining guidelines include: A) Employing a robust, rigid machine with exceptionally strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Minimizing tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Ensuring the tool nose radius is as short as necessary to maintain a sharp edge while providing sufficient strength; D) Strategically designing the machining sequence so that the depth of cut consistently stays below the work-hardened layer from the preceding operation.
