GENERAL PROPERTIES

The 317L Stainless Steel Pipe is a specialized, low-carbon, molybdenum-enhanced austenitic stainless steel. Designed with increased chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, this alloy offers superior resistance to corrosion and various chemicals, including sulfite, acetic, formic, citric, and tartaric acids. Its low carbon content allows it to avoid sensitization during welding, and it boasts higher creep resistance, rupture stress, and tensile strength at elevated temperatures. The alloy remains nonmagnetic in its annealed state but may achieve slight magnetism post-welding.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS

• Compatible with all common fusion and resistance welding techniques, excluding oxyacetylene welding.
• For optimal results, utilize AWS E317L/ER317L filler metals or austenitic, low-carbon filler metals with higher molybdenum content than 317L. Nickel-base filler metals with adequate chromium and molybdenum content should also be considered for superior corrosion resistance.

MACHINABILITY

• To minimize work hardening, employ low speeds and consistent feeds.
• More resilient than 304 stainless steel, it produces long, stringy chips; thus, chip breakers are advisable.
