CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits superior resistance compared to 304 in a diverse range of atmospheric and corrosive environments, thanks to its elevated chromium
  and molybdenum content.
• However, it is vulnerable to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride surroundings and stress corrosion cracking beyond 122°F (50°C).
• Deemed resistant to potable water with chloride levels up to approximately 1000mg/L at ambient temperatures, reducing to about 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Commonly referred to as the 'marine grade stainless steel,' yet it lacks resistance to warm seawater.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Boasts good oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and in continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L offers enhanced resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Displays excellent weldability via all standard fusion methods, both with and without filler metals.
• Post-weld annealing is essential for maximum corrosion resistance in heavy welded sections of Grade 316, but not for 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing temperature range is from 1900°F to 2100°F (1038°C to 1149°C).
• Cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
• Special considerations are required to counterbalance a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to avoid warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C) for optimal results.
• Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• 316/316L grades, known for their toughness and ductility, can be easily cold worked through roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  and bending, without difficulty.
• Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to alleviate stresses.

MACHINABILITY:

• Type 316/316L is relatively more challenging to machine than Type 304 due to its toughness.
• 316/316L produces tough and strong chip characteristics.
• Utilize chip breakers and curlers for optimal results.
• Employ the largest possible tool and significant amounts of cutting fluid.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds since 316/316L work hardens quickly.
