ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code specifies a maximum temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to temperatures above this can result in embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 boasts more than twice the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels when annealed. In the cold-worked condition, it offers an impressive yield strength exceeding 160 ksi, maintaining good toughness even at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 can be effectively cold-formed, although it has a high work-hardening rate, necessitating intermediate anneals. Subsequent annealing is recommended after both hot and cold forming to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.

Leading manufacturers advise a maximum hot forming temperature range of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece isn't homogeneous, cooler edges may lead to cracking.

Duplex 2205 poses a slightly greater machining challenge compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steels. Increased cutting forces are required, leading to quicker tool wear. To optimize machining, consider the following guidelines: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine with robust tool and workpiece mounts; B) Maintain short tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Limit the tool nose radius to ensure a sharp edge while maintaining adequate carbide strength; D) Design the machining sequence to ensure the depth of cut consistently penetrates below the work-hardened layer from previous operations.
