Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy designed to conserve nickel, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional Cr-Ni stainless steels like 301 and 304. In 201, nickel is substituted by manganese and nitrogen. Although it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, it achieves high tensile strength through cold working. Initially non-magnetic in the annealed state, it becomes magnetic post cold working. This mid-range stainless steel is widely used in appliances, cookers, sinks, kitchen utensils, catering equipment, automotive parts, fixtures, carriages, and window trim, thanks to its structural strength. However, it's less suitable for outdoor applications due to susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion from seawater and other factors.
