431 Stainless Steel Bar Material is renowned for its excellent corrosion resistance across a variety of corrosive environments. It shows moderate resistance to salt water in the colder southern waters, though it may not perform as well in warmer tropical waters. Overall, the corrosion resistance of 431 Round Bar Material is comparable to, or slightly less than, that of 304 Grade Material. It delivers optimal performance with a smooth surface in a hardened and tempered state.
This material resists scaling in intermittent service up to 925°C and in continuous service up to 870°C. However, it is generally not recommended for use at temperatures exceeding the relevant tempering temperature due to a reduction in mechanical properties.
Full anneal is impractical for this grade as it hardens even with slow cooling. For process annealing, heat to 620-660°C and allow it to air cool.
Harden by heating to 980-1065°C, hold for approximately 30 minutes, then quench in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C can be beneficial for complex parts or those already hardened. Temper according to mechanical requirements, as detailed in the accompanying table.
Avoid the tempering range between 425-600°C due to reduced impact toughness, although the effect is less pronounced compared to most other martensitic grades.
Welding is challenging due to the risk of cracking. Pre-heating at 200-300°C is recommended prior to welding. While Grade 410 filler rod can be used, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 will result in more ductile welds, provided matching properties are not required. Post-weld heat treatment should be conducted at 650°C.
In its annealed condition, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, machining becomes more difficult when hardened above 30HRC. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances machining speeds and tool life.
Nuts and bolts. Propeller shafting. Pump shafts. Beater bars. Marine hardware.
These properties are specified for bar products under ASTM A276. Although similar, properties specified for other products like plates and forgings may differ as per their respective specifications.
