CORROSION RESISTANCE:
316L Stainless steel rod
- 316L stainless steel rod offers remarkable corrosion resistance, making it generally more resilient than 304 stainless steel across a broad spectrum of atmospheric environments and various corrosive media, thanks to its elevated chromium content.
This is further enhanced by its high molybdenum content, providing superior protection. - However, it may be prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and can experience stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 122°F (50°C).
- It is considered resistant to potable water with chloride levels up to approximately 1000 mg/L at ambient temperatures, decreasing to about 500 mg/L at 140°F (60°C).
This adaptability makes it a versatile choice for numerous applications. - Commonly recognized as the 'marine grade stainless steel,' it still lacks resistance to warm seawater, necessitating caution in certain applications.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- 316L stainless steel displays excellent oxidation resistance, performing well in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and in continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
- Grade 316L has a lower risk of carbide precipitation, making it highly durable under various thermal conditions.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:
- Exhibiting exceptional weldability, 316L stainless steel can be effectively welded using all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals.
- Heavy welded sections in Grade 316 require post-weld annealing to ensure optimal corrosion resistance; however, this step is not necessary for Grade 316L.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- The ideal annealing temperature range for 316L stainless steel is between 1900°F and 2100°F (1038°C to 1149°C).
- It cannot be hardened through heat treatment alone.
- Special measures must be taken to account for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion, which can lead to warping and distortion if not managed properly.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- Most manufacturers recommend a forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F for optimal results.
- Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C).
- Optimal corrosion resistance can be achieved by performing a final anneal on the forgings.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- 316/316L stainless steel rods are incredibly tough and ductile, making them suitable for various cold-working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing, and bending.
These processes can be performed without significant difficulty. - Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to relieve any internal stresses.
MACHINEABILITY:
- Due to its toughness, machining 316/316L stainless steel rods is somewhat more challenging compared to Type 304.
- 316/316L rods produce tough, strong chips during machining.
- Using chip breakers and curlers is highly recommended.
- Employing the largest possible tool size, along with ample cutting fluid, is advised for better machining efficiency.
- Consider using heavy positive feeds at low speeds, as 316/316L tends to work harden rapidly.
