GENERAL PROPERTIES

316/316L stainless steel alloy is an exceptional austenitic stainless steel pipe infused with molybdenum. The heightened levels of nickel and molybdenum in this grade significantly enhance its overall corrosion resistance compared to 304, particularly in pitting and crevice corrosion under chloride conditions. Furthermore, 316/316L seamless pipe boasts outstanding high temperature tensile, creep, and stress rupture strength, coupled with excellent formability and weldability. The 316L variant, being a low carbon form of 316, is highly resistant to sensitization and is thus extensively utilized for large-sized welded components.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Superior corrosion resistance compared to 304 in diverse atmospheric environments and many corrosive media, thanks to the enhanced chromium
  and molybdenum content.
• Vulnerable to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments, and stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above approximately 122°F (50°C).
• Deemed resistant to potable water with chloride levels up to about 1000mg/L at ambient temperatures, diminishing to 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Commonly known as the "marine grade stainless steel" - yet not impervious to warm sea water.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L showcases superior resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Offers exceptional weldability using all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals.
• Post-weld annealing is crucial for maximum corrosion resistance in Grade 316 heavy welded sections, but unnecessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• Annealing temperature ranges between 1900°F and 2100°F (1038°C to 1149°C).
• Heat treatment cannot harden the material.
• Special care must be taken to account for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C). The best
• corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings receive a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• The 316/316L types, known for their toughness and ductility, can be effortlessly cold worked via roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., with ease.
• Severely cold-formed parts should undergo annealing to alleviate stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• Type 316/316L is somewhat more challenging to machine than Type 304 due to its toughness.
• It machines with chip characteristics that are robust and resilient.
• Utilization of chip breakers and curlers is recommended.
• Employing large tools and substantial cutting fluids is advised.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds, given that 316/316L rapidly work hardens.
