Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy designed to conserve nickel, presenting a cost-effective alternative to other Cr-Ni stainless steels like 301 and 304. With manganese and nitrogen replacing nickel, this grade delivers high tensile strength through cold working, though it cannot be hardened by heat treatment. In its annealed state, it's non-magnetic but gains magnetism after cold working. Ideal for a variety of applications, such as appliances, cookers, sinks, kitchen utensils, and catering equipment, 201 stainless steel also finds use in automotive parts, fixtures, and window trim. While its structural strength is commendable, it may not be suitable for outdoor structural applications due to potential pitting and crevice corrosion from seawater exposure.
