Type 201 stainless steel is a distinct austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy designed to conserve nickel, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional Cr-Ni grades like 301 and 304. Featuring nickel replaced by manganese and nitrogen, Type 201 achieves high tensile strength through cold working, although it cannot be hardened by heat treatment. This grade is non-magnetic in its annealed state but becomes magnetic upon cold working. Commonly used in appliances, cookers, sinks, kitchen utensils, catering equipment, automotive parts, fixtures, carriages, and window trims, Type 201 boasts robust structural strength. However, it is less suitable for outdoor applications due to its susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion from seawater and other factors.
