Fabrication Data

Cold Forming
- 904L stainless steel is highly ductile and easily formable. However, the addition of molybdenum and nitrogen may necessitate more powerful processing equipment compared to standard 304/304L grades, ensuring the material's integrity and performance.
Hot Forming
- Hot working procedures for 904L stainless steel require temperatures between 1562°F and 2102°F (850-1150°C). Typically, hot working should be followed by solution annealing and quenching. However, if hot forming ceases above 2012°F (1100°C) and the material is quenched immediately, further heat treatment may not be necessary. It is crucial to quench the entire workpiece from temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C). If partial heating or cooling falls below this temperature, or if cooling is too slow, solution annealing and quenching should follow. Solution annealing for 904L should be conducted at 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- The cold work hardening rate of Alloy 904L results in it being less machinable compared to 410 and 304 stainless steels. However, with proper techniques, it can be effectively machined for various applications.
Welding
- Alloy 904L is compatible with most conventional welding methods. It possesses a uniform austenitic structure with a balanced distribution of alloying elements. During solidification post-welding, elements like molybdenum, chromium, and nickel may redistribute, potentially reducing corrosion resistance. However, segregation is minimal in 904L, and it can be welded with or without filler metal of the same composition as the base metal.
- The recommended welding consumables for 904L are 20 25 CuL covered electrode and 20 25 CuL wire, ensuring optimal performance and durability.
