431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts exceptional corrosion resistance across a broad range of corrosive environments. While it may withstand saltwater exposure in cooler southern waters, it is less effective in warmer tropical waters. Comparatively, the corrosion resistance of 431 Round Bar Material is similar to, or slightly less than, that of 304 Grade Material. Optimal performance is achieved with a polished surface in its hardened and tempered state.
This material resists scaling when subjected to intermittent service up to 925°C and continuous service up to 870°C. However, it is generally not advisable to use it at temperatures exceeding the relevant tempering temperature, as this can lead to a decrease in mechanical properties.
Full annealing is impractical for this grade, as it hardens even with slow cooling. Process annealing involves heating to 620-660°C followed by air cooling.
This material is hardened by heating to a range of 980-1065°C, holding for approximately half an hour, then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C can be beneficial for complex parts or those already hardened. Tempering should align with mechanical requirements, utilizing the temperature ranges indicated in the accompanying table.
Avoid the tempering range of 425-600°C due to decreased impact toughness, though the effect is less pronounced compared to other martensitic grades.
Welding this material presents challenges due to the risk of cracking. Pre-heating to 200-300°C before welding is advisable. While a 410-grade filler rod can be used, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 will yield more ductile welds if matching properties are not required. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is recommended.
In its annealed state, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, once hardened above 30HRC, machining difficulty increases. A Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances achievable machining speeds and extends tool life.
Ideal for a variety of applications including nuts and bolts, propeller shafts, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
The properties of this material are specified for bar products in ASTM A276. Similar, though not necessarily identical, properties are specified for other products such as plates and forgings in their respective specifications.
