316/316L stainless steel alloy is a prime austenitic steel containing molybdenum. The heightened nickel and molybdenum content in this grade significantly enhances its overall corrosion resistance compared to 304, particularly in environments prone to pitting and crevice corrosion due to chlorides. CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Due to the increased chromium and molybdenum content, our 316 stainless steel is generally more resistant than 304 across various atmospheric conditions and many corrosive environments.

• However, it is prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride settings and to stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 122°F (50°C).

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibiting excellent oxidation resistance, it performs well in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and in continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L offers enhanced resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Our 316-grade stainless steel exhibits outstanding weldability through all standard fusion methods, whether with or without filler metals.
• For maximal corrosion resistance, heavy welded sections in Grade 316 require post-weld annealing. This step is not necessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• Annealing should be conducted in the temperature range of 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• It cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
• Special attention is needed to account for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to avoid warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C) for optimal results.
• For best corrosion resistance, ensure the forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• The 316/316L types are incredibly tough and ductile, making them ideal for cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, and more, all without difficulty.
• Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to alleviate stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• The toughness of Type 316/316L makes it somewhat more challenging to machine compared to Type 304.
• 316/316L produces chips that are robust and durable.
• The use of chip breakers and curlers is recommended.
• Employing the largest possible tools and copious amounts of cutting fluid is advised.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds due to the rapid work hardening of 316/316L.
