GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium stainless steel, non-hardenable and renowned for its exceptional corrosion resistance and formability. With usable mechanical properties, it is a versatile choice for various chemical applications. However, it finds its most prominent use in automobile trims and appliance components.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining version of this grade, available in bar form tailored for automatic screw machines. Grade 434, a molybdenum-bearing counterpart of Grade 430, shares the same desirable characteristics. The added molybdenum enhances corrosion resistance, making it an excellent choice for demanding environments.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the specifications of Grade 430 for flat-rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. Other product forms like forgings and bars maintain similar yet distinct qualities according to their respective specifications. For bar forms, Grade 430F properties are detailed in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material offers commendable resistance to a broad spectrum of corrosive environments, including various organic acids. The highest levels of corrosion resistance are attained when the material is highly polished or ground. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is on par with that of Grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, 430 boasts remarkable resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining version, Grade 430F, exhibits a considerably reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high-sulfur, free-machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 stainless steel resists oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and up to 815°C in continuous service. Prolonged heating in the range of 400-600°C may induce brittleness at room temperature, which can be alleviated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, followed by slow furnace cooling to 600°C, then rapid air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C may cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat at 150-200°C if welding is necessary.
- Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone can be effectively relieved through a post-weld anneal at temperatures ranging from 790-815°C.
- Grain refinement will not occur, maintaining the material's inherent properties.
MACHINING:
- This material is easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades such as 304, providing efficiency in manufacturing.
- However, there is still a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool, necessitating careful handling.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn offer superior machinability compared to those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free machining version of 430, greatly enhances ease of machining.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate simplifies bending and forming processes compared to grade 304.
- However, lower ductility restricts the extent of very severe operations.
- Severe bends should be executed with the bend axis at right angles to the rolling direction for optimal results.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is indeed possible, allowing for diverse applications.
